The Chinese Shar-Pei means "sand skin" referring to there loose skin and harsh coat. The coat comes in 3 different types. Brush Coat, Horse Coat and Bear Coat. The coats come in different colors but only solid colors and sables are allowed to be shown in conformation .
General Appearance of the Chinese Shar-Pei is an alert, compact dog of medium size and substance; square in profile, close coupled; the well proportioned head slightly, but not overly large for the body. The short, harsh coat, the loose skin covering the head and body, the small ears, the "hippopotamus" muzzle shape and the high set tail impart to the Shar-Pei a unique look peculiar to him alone. The loose skin and wrinkles covering the head, neck and body are superabundant in puppies but these features may be limited to the head, neck and withers in the adult. The height is 18 to 20 inches at the withers. The AKC or the CSPCA does not recognize the term "miniature" for the Shar-Pei. The average weight is 45 to 60 pounds. A Shar-Pei is measured by height not weight.
The movement of the Shar-Pei is to be judged at a trot. The gait is free and balanced with the feet tending to converge on a centerline of gravity when the dog moves at a vigorous trot. The gait combines good forward reach and strong drive in the hindquarters. Proper movement is essential.
The standard temperament of the Shar-Pei is regal, alert, intelligent, dignified, lordly, scowling, sober and snobbish essentially independent and somewhat standoffish with strangers, but extreme in his devotion to his family. The Shar-Pei stands firmly on the ground with a calm, confident stature.
Our goal has always been to produce health dogs with good temperaments and versatility. Many of our dogs are active with their local Kennel Club participating in different events such as Conformation, Barn Hunt, Rally, Agility, and Obedience.
I always have believed ... A well socialized Shar-Pei is happy and trainable. Encourage Pei owners to start training and socializing their new puppy right away. The Shar-Pei is a versatile, primal, and highly intelligent breed.
Our dogs have been healthy going back generations. We have not experienced Shar-Pei Fevers, Swollen Hock Syndrome, or Major Skin Issues.
Sandstones originated in North Dakata with Sandy and Jess. In 2023 Sandstones lost their kennel building, grooming/boarding business and home due to ice damming. The rebuilding cost thousands more than they could afford. It was very hard loss. Sandy stayed in North Dakota with her son, Colton. They have retired Sandstones dogs and living the best life they can.
Jess begun her new chapter in Southern Illinois with the new generation of Sandstone dogs Arya and Latigo. Shar-Pei traditional colors expected fawns, reds, sable with show quality structure and movement.
